Research supported by federal contract funding typically requires reporting of subject inventions. These reports are usually due on an annual basis with a final report due upon project completion, often as part of the closeout process. The DD Form 882 Report of Inventions and Subcontracts is the standard form for reporting inventions to the federal government, but some companies may use their own forms to collect the same information.
As the authorized signatory for the University, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is responsible for signing invention reports. However, invention reports require review by Pitt’s Innovation Institute, so invention reports must be submitted to OSP as soon as possible to allow for sufficient time for OSP and Innovation Institute review.
If a sponsor asks you to submit an invention report for your project supported by federal contract funding:
- Follow the instructions provided on the invention report form to complete the form with as much information as you have, but do not sign the form.
- Email the completed form to OSP at fedcon@pitt.edu.
- OSP will verify the information provided in the form with the Innovation Institute.
- After verification by the Innovation Institute, OSP will sign the invention report and submit the signed form to the sponsor.
If the invention report is part of a closeout package for your project, be sure to provide OSP with the entire closeout package for processing.
