External Participant

The meaning of the term "External Participant" can vary depending upon the scope of work being performed within a research project. It refers to work being performed on the research project outside of University of Pittsburgh employees. The term includes individuals, collaborators, Subcontractors/Subawardees, and consultants (paid and unpaid).

Subcontractors/Subawardees* of Public Health Service-funded research projects who are following the University of Pittsburgh’s Conflict of Interest Policy must complete the Subrecipient Proposal SFI Disclosure Form  prior to the submission of the research proposal by the University of Pittsburgh, annually thereafter, and during the year if they accrue new outside interests. These Subcontractors/Subawardees must also complete the CITI COI module before engaging in research under the Public Health Service-funded project.

Consultants must complete the COI disclosure form embedded in University Policy 11-01-04 at the time of appointment, annually thereafter, and during the year if they accrue new outside interests.

*Please note that if the prime award is a federal contract, depending upon the scope of work, this requirement also may apply to Contracted Service Agreements or Purchased Service Agreements for entities or individuals.
