Data Management and Sharing Policy: Additional New Resources Available

The new National Institutes of Health (NIH) Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS) will go into effect for proposals submitted on or after January 25, 2023 (see NIH NOT-OD-21-013). NIH investigators are encouraged to explore the many resources available on sharing.nih.gov, including the newly added FAQs, Sample DMS Plans, and tips.

To help address Element 6: Oversight of Data Management and Sharing, the Office of Research Protections and the Office of Sponsored Programs drafted language that investigators can use in their plans:

The Principal Investigator will oversee the management and sharing of data during the study process. Effective January 25, 2023, the University of Pittsburgh will require the Principal Investigator to certify at the times of annual progress report and final report that the NIH-approved data sharing and management plan(s) has/have been followed. The University of Pittsburgh Office of Research Protections will periodically audit the NIH-approved data sharing and management plans for adherence.

The Pitt Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) is an additional source of information and has resources available for Pitt faculty to help prepare and draft their DMS plans. HSLS promotes the use of DMPTool, a tool available to Pitt faculty using their Pitt login credentials to help create compliant DMS plans.
