NIH Implementation Update on Data Management and Sharing Plan Requirements

On July 29, 2026, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued NOT-OD-26-100, providing implementation details for the updated Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan format introduced in NOT-OD-26-046. The update affects the DMS Plan format and reporting requirements only:

  • The updated format applies to all awards and applications subject to the DMS Policy, regardless of when the competing application was submitted.
  • Competing applications submitted on or after May 25, 2026 should use the updated DMS Plan format at the time of submission.
  • Competing applications submitted before May 25, 2026 that are not yet awarded should provide a revised plan in the updated format at Just-in-Time (JIT); if already awarded, the plan should be updated at the next Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR).
  • Active awards should provide a plan in the updated format with their next RPPR.
  • Prior approval is no longer required to modify an approved DMS Plan; NIH plans to retire the DMS Prior Approval Request type in the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module.
  • Beginning October 1, 2026, changes to an approved plan (ex: a new data repository, a change in scientific direction, or an adjusted sharing timeline) should be reported in the RPPR at Section C.5.c.

For the updated format and additional guidance, see NIH's Data Management and Sharing Plan Format Page.
