NIH Prior Approval Requests: Use the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module
A reminder that since February 2026, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) require all prior approval requests for grants and cooperative agreements to be submitted through the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module (NOT-OD-26-026). Requests sent by email or other means will not be accepted.
This applies to all prior approval request types, including:
- No-cost extensions
- Carryover requests
- Change of PD/PI
- Change in scope or objectives
- Change in key personnel
- Adding a new subaward
- Data Management and Sharing (DMS) requests
- Withdrawals
- Adding a foreign component
Only a Signing Official can submit a prior approval request, which means these requests must be routed through the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Route prior approval requests, including all supporting request documentation and PI verification, in MyFunding as an Award Modification Request (AMR).
For more information on NIH Prior Approval Requirements, see NIH Grants Policy Statement and the eRA Commons requirements for prior approval requests.
