When submitting a National Institutes of Health (NIH) application with more than one Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI), a Multiple PD/PI Leadership Plan is required. The Multiple Principal Investigator (MPI) plan is reviewed and scored.
The Leadership Plan must address:
- Rationale for choosing the MPI approach rather than a single-PI model
- Roles and responsibilities of each PD/PI
- Governance and organizational structure of the team
- Communication and scientific decision-making processes
- Conflict resolution procedures
One PI must be designated as the Contact PI, who serves as the primary point of contact with the NIH.
For more information, see the NIH Grants Policy Statement Section 9.3, Multiple Principal Investigators | Grants & Funding, and the related NIH MPI FAQs.
