The Federal government is able to designate certain information as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Although CUI is not classified, the Federal government requires careful safeguarding and control of CUI for those who are expected to generate it or receive it.
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is receiving more agreements that include terms and references to CUI. OSP is partnering with the Office of Trade Compliance and Pitt IT Security to carefully review any research contract terms that are related to CUI to ensure the terms are applicable and appropriate for the work being conducted. If CUI is expected to be generated or received in a research project, a plan will be prepared with the Project Team to ensure that any potential CUI is safeguarded according to the Federal government’s standards.
To better track potential CUI in OSP records, CUI questions have been added to both PERIS™ MyFunding and MyRA.
