Finding Funding: Resources and Opportunities for New Researchers

The University of Pittsburgh subscribes to Pivot, a comprehensive source for funding information that provides timely updates and recommendations tailored to your scholarly profile. The Office of Sponsored Programs hosts workshops to provide an overview of Pivot and how it may be used to find funding and collaboration opportunities to support research and scholarly endeavours.

Workshops are interactive and  informal, and allow for as much individualized interaction as time permits. Additional resources for identifying prestigious academic awards, funding programs for early career faculty, and internally-coordinated competitions for limited submission and University-funded programs will also be presented. The OSP Research Development team is partnering on the presentations with McAllister & Quinn, a DC-based firm that consults on federal and private foundation grant opportunities for higher education clients. Each session will go into detail on strategic approaches to developing critical pieces of a successful NIH applicatin. Also, an opportunity will be provided for faculty to have specific questions answered through office hours by a scientific writer with extensive NIH grant writing experience.

The NEH recently recorded a 25 minute presentation which offers suggestions on writing a successful application to the NEH Summer Stipends program (deadline September 23, 2020). The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) invites Assistant Professors to participate in a workshop series designed for faculty interested in learning more about the NSF CAREER program. The series is structured as four, one-hour focused discussions intended to enhance proposal development:

Federal Funding: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

For sixty years, DARPA has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security.

DARPA explicitly reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances. But it does not perform its engineering alchemy in isolation. It works within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners, with a constant focus on the Nation’s military Services, which work with DARPA to create new strategic opportunities and novel tactical options. For decades, this vibrant, interlocking ecosystem of diverse collaborators has proven to be a nurturing environment for the intense creativity that DARPA is designed to cultivate.

Presented by experts from McAllister & Quinn, a Washington, DC-based consulting firm, and hosted by the Office of Sponsored Programs, this presentation is designed to introduce ways in to working with DARPA and will provide a first step in connecting with DARPA Program Managers.

Federal Funding: Young Investigator Funding from the Department of Defense

The DOD Young Investigator Mission is designed to attract outstanding tenure-track faculty members from Institutions of Higher Education to: foster creative basic research in science and engineering; enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators; and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Department of Defense’s research programs.

Join federal funding experts from the McAllister & Quinn consulting firm for a web-based introduction to the DOD Young Investigator Programs and start to build a plan to prepare a submission to one of these prestigious programs. Feel free to bring a lunch!

Pivot for Research Administrators

Research administrators provide myriad services to the departments, laboratories, and groups with whom they work. In some settings, this work involves active awareness and participation in a constantly changing funding opportunity ecosystem. In this introductory workshop to Pivot, a funding opportunity database, you will learn how to create and maintain deadline calendars; to automate new program announcements; and to share this information with your constituencies.
