Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Funding

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

The University's diversity initiatives were created to help build Pitt into a world class model of equity, diversity, and inclusion defined by inclusive academic excellence and an environment that allows everyone to succeed. Pitt's OEDI provides vision, leadership, and counsel on matters of equity, diversity and inclusion, and partners with units and campuses to create welcoming and respectful environments that enable everyone to perform to their full potential.

The Office of Sponsored Programs Research Development team curates funding information for researchers and scholars from across the University. Many sponsors offer funding specific to EDI initiatives and research. The RD team maintains the following resources of funder-specific EDI opportunities. If you have any questions regarding EDI Funding Opportunities, please email grantdev@pitt.edu

NIH Diversity Funding Opportunities

The National Institutes of Health's Diversity in Extramural Programs site contains important information for researchers about their commitment to diversity, as well as EDI's importance in educational and research-centered environments.

NSF Broadening Participation in STEM Initiative

The National Science Foundation's efforts toward diversity and inclusion are focused on participation in STEM-related careers. Their commitment, "to expanding opportunities in STEM to people of all racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities and to persons with disabilities" is outlined in their Broadening Participation in STEM initiative.

NEH DEI Opportunities

The National Endowment for the Humanities has released an Equity Action Plan to continue its mission to "expand access to the humanities to 'people of all backgrounds' for decades to come." An Equity Task Force was established in June 2022, with set objectives to further DEI efforts in the organization.

To find current NEH diversity funding opportunities, searches can be conducted through their Grants page, utilizing keywords such as diversity, equity, and inclusion. Users can also access all past awards given by the NEH, filtered by topic or keyword, as well as the organization of the awardee.

Private/Foundation DEI Opportunities

Many private funders and foundations offer funding opportunities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A curated list of these programs on Pivot can be found here [link].

Pitt's Corporate and Foundation Relations office within the Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement assists faculty with funding opportunities from private foundations and corporations that are philanthropic in nature.
